The Academy for Computational Explorations in Science (ACES) is a cooperative project of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and the Black Child Development Institute of Greensboro thanks to generous support from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund. The mission of ACES is to engage area middle and high school students in opportunities for an exploratory, hands-on, scientific discovery using relevant mathematics and science curriculum
The activities of ACES are designed to excite, encourage, and enable participants to ultimately pursue degrees and careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines with guidance by the goals of the Burroughs Wellcome Fund Student Science Enrichment Program
The 2009 ACES program brought together 16 middle and high students, college students, faculty, and research scientists under the direction of Dr. Dominic P. Clemence. This summer program engaged sixteen ACES Fellows in a guided environment which exposes them to the practice of Computational Science in research applications such as mathematical biology, aerodynamics, and climate studies; Besides focused exploratory research projects in one of these application areas, the summer curriculum also included research opportunities for the participants and two field trips.
